Breakfast Ideas for Your Best Life on Dialysis

When you are on dialysis, your diet is an important part of your overall treatment plan.

Following a healthy meal plan that is high in protein and low in sodium and phosphorus can prevent many health problems such as heart disease, bone disease, and infections. This will help you feel better and live longer. Your dietitian is available to guide you as the dialysis diet can be confusing at first. It is best to start the day with a healthy, high protein breakfast.

Here are 3 quick tips for a dialysis friendly breakfast:

  1. Protein, especially from eggs, is essential at breakfast for people on dialysis. The dialysis process is a stressor on the body and also tends to remove protein from the blood. Protein is needed to prevent and fight infections. You can also drink a protein shake or eat a protein bar for breakfast when you are not able to eat eggs.
  2. Avoid salty processed meats, especially bacon and sausage. These processed meats are full of sodium and phosphorus. These minerals can build up and cause serious health problems for people on dialysis.
  3. Fruits and vegetables are recommended at each meal to increase fiber and other micronutrients needed for health. Fiber keeps bowels regular, which improves the dialysis experience. Other nutrients in plant foods provide anti-inflammatory effects. Inflammation may contribute to many health problems for dialysis patients.

Throughout the day, choose fresh foods rather than packaged or processed foods whenever possible. Fresh foods usually mean high quality protein and less phosphorus and sodium. And, if you have been prescribed a phosphate binder, make sure to take it with all meals to capture any phosphorus that might linger in even your healthy meals.
